Providing more sporting opportunities for those who may have a disability or learning difficulties is an area of our Community Trust programme that we are very passionate about providing. We are currently working closely with Somerset FA to raise awareness and promote disability sport in North Somerset and across the whole of the South West region. For the past two years we have been awarded funding from the DFDF (disabled footballers development fund) and football Mash Up. This funding has allowed us to work with local schools, authorities and organisations to provide sessions that coincide with local and national strategic planning for disability football.
We are currently in our third year of working in partnership with Westhaven School to provide leaning opportunities for those with special educational needs. Alongside this we have also linked with Worle Ability FC and Weston Warriors FC to provide playing and coaching opportunities for its players. As well as the enjoyment that comes with sport for these teams, we have been on hand to provide support and develop more opportunities for those with disabilities and mental health issues. We are also working with the autistic unit at Weston College to provide opportunities for work experience. By creating these links we have been able to help Somerset FA with their talent ID programme to signpost promising footballers through the development pathway set out by The FA.
The sessions were fantastic! All of the students learnt lots despite their ability. It was also great for the staff as they had on the job CPD. We would love to have Geoff back in again.Mr Tommy Barlow - Head of PE - Westhaven School
